I can't fucking believe you don't have Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. holy shit dude. that's just wrong.
Furthermore, 50 Cent should NOT be in the top 5000 songs of the past 25 years, let alone in the top 10.
The morons that wrote this list are letting current trends overly effect their decision making process. That song will barely be a footnote in music history in 20 years. I remember there was some stupid ass rap song by a guy named Mase way back in the day, and it topped tons of "best of" lists. well where the fuck is it now, and who the hell remembers or cares?
More random thoughts on the rest of the list:
It’s awesome that Cut Your Hair by Pavement is on the list, but it’s not better than the White Stripes by any means.
I’m astonished at how saturated the first 100 is by rap songs. Astonished and puzzled. Some of it’s good, I admit it. But most of it doesn’t belong in the top 100.
I’m glad to see Monkey Gone to Heaven by the Pixies on the list, but really… there are much better Pixies songs that deserve to be in that slot.
As to Phantom Planet, indeed Jason Schwartzman was the drummer, even on California. But he is no longer with the band.
I’m pleased as punch that my favorite Death Cab for Cutie song is on the list.
Rob, I remember I sent you Debaser and you hated it. Aaah, how times have changed.
Also, I disagree with you whole-heartedly about the Hives CD. As a matter of fact I think all three are fucking great. And they kick ass in concert.
Lips Like Sugar by Echo and the Bunnymen is very, very good, but Killing Moon is better.
OK, I am a huge fan of the Shins. And I love that Kissing the Lipless is on this list, cause it’s one of my favorites. And I don’t mean to sound all Garden State soundtrack bandwagon jumper-onner, but seriously… New Slang is one of the greatest songs of all time, and is definitely the best song by The Shins. I also prefer Young Pilgrims.
More Elliott Smith should be on this list. He was a genius.
Woo! Von Bondies on the list! YEAH!
I am shocked and amazed that you could live in North America your entire life and only have heard Beck’s Where It’s At *THIS* summer. Dude… that’s sheltered. Also, Beck should have more songs higher up this list. He is like unto a god.
Thank God the mildly retarded writers of this list had the sense to put Bright Eyes on it.
Baby Got Back sooooooo should be in the top 100.
Thank God for Ben Folds.
I am blown away that Spoon is on here. They’re one of my favorite bands, and putting the lead track off one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time just sent my opinion of this list skyrocketing out of the chasm.
Gigantic. Yes. I love this song. Do you now understand this song is about a black man’s gigantic penis Rob? Do you? If not, listen again.
We Are All on Drugs? They must be. I love Weezer, they are my quintessential all-time favorite band. But I can name 6 songs on the same album as this that are better. I can name Pinkerton or the Green Album or half the tracks on Maladroit, and, don’t get me wrong, I like the song, but, those are ALL better.
As to Common People… William Shatner FOREVER. (it was also produced by Ben Folds)
That's it.
I'm a little slow on the up take. That's probably why I don't have Love Will Tear Us Apart. I'm downloading it now, if that makes you feel better.
I have a feeling that if you grew up in the states or in a large urban area that you'd find the rap choices more palatable. It's our redneck upbringing, I tell you.
I'm not suprised at all with all the rap in the top 100. Rap exploded in the 90s becoming the dominant music of that decade, despite the grunge's influence. That's a fact, man.
I've listened to both the live version of Monkey Goes to Heaven and the original and I have to say I like the live version more. The energy is much better. And I agree that there's other Pixies songs that should be on the list. I personally think that Cactus and Broken Face should be up here, but I'm like that.
Music critics keep on raving about Pavement. Am I missing out?
I'm sticking to what I have to say about the Hives. That said, I dig them more than I dig the Strokes.
I've lived under a rock where there's no music. That's how I can miss stuff like Where It's At. You gotta remember that my first experience with Beck was Midnight Vultures. I was under the impression for the longest time that he was this really funky singer. I was pleasantly suprised when I heard his other stuff.
Yes, I am aware that Gigantic is about a black man's cock. You tell me that as many times as I tell you the story about Rene Russo's tits.
I'm listening to Love Will Tear Us Apart right now. Would it be a correct assumption to assume that these guys come from the late 80s, early 90s?

Wow, that's a long list filled with a bunch of songs that don't belong in a top 500 list; and that's only in the first 100 that I bothered to read . . .
At any rate, "How Soon Is Now" is that song that's prevalent in The Craft and that's heard in the opening credits to Charmed.
Hey John, I haven't heard from you in ages. How are things.
Sadly (or possibly gladly), I'm not up on my witchograhy and have seen neither of those fine examples of wiccan entertainment.
I hate Blender. Every ish or at least second ish, they have some bullshit list that is full of crap really. I mean really....why the hell make a list of 500 when you can't go into detail why they are so good? I swear the reason they do this is to get people all riled up about their own taste in music.
With all due respect, the Blender top 500 is much like any top X list. They have rather comprehensive write ups on the top songs and less on the lower ones. The Blender, much like the Spin one dedicated around a page or so for the top 10 and less after that.
I like Blender's lists, although I'm an acknowledged list whore. That said, their writing is incredibly poor and doesn't compare to Rolling Stone in the slightest.
Things are well. I'm back in school as a PoliSci major, I traveled to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand this summer, and (in case our last talk hasn't been in the past year) I'm once again single.
You should swing by TNB and say hello every now and then. ;-)
As for your lack of witchography experience, just check your local listings for Charmed - I think they play it about seven times a day - and listen to the first few minutes for a free preview of the song.
Then change the channel to find something good on.
I take a swing by the New Buzz about once a week, but I've never been one much to post on a discussion board. I've dropped by the Saunctuary a couple of times too, but it's always empty with Ivo bitching about being alone in silence. Nice to know that things don't change.
How was Asia? Hook up with any cuties? Sucks about your breakup, tho'.
jSarek says . . .
If by "hook up with any cuties," you mean "got briefly felt up in Bangkok by someone who was either a lousy pickpocket, an unpersuasive prostitute, or really drunk and genuinely confused about my identity," then yes, I did; otherwise, I'm afraid not. ;-)
Breakup was for the best; it took me surprisingly little time to get over it.
Did you get a chance to see any ladyboy shows? All of my friends that have gone to Thailand said that seeing the shows was one the funnest and most interesting parts of the trip. The girls suppposedly look *really* hot.
Didn't take you that long to get over her, eh? I *knew* that you were a robot! *makes robotic sounds*WHERE MY BITCHES AT?
the best song, not only of the last twenty-five years but of all time is black hole sun by Soundgarden .
Enough said.
u must be the only yoko ono fan in the universe.
